Cardigan Bay
Cardigan Bay, a large inlet of the Irish Sea, lies on the indent of the Welsh coast between the Pembrokshire and Llyn peninsulas. With its white sandy beaches, calm seas and great sealife, Cardigan Bay is one of the most beautiful and popular stretches of British coastline today. Here’s a bit of information which may come in handy should you be planning a trip to Cardigan Bay.
The Area
The majority of the land surrounding the bay is used as farmland due to its fertile soils and rural community. There are also some really good little seaside towns such as New Quay (not to be confused with Cornwall’s Newquay...), Aberaeron, Barmouth and Pwllheli which is on the Cambrian Coast as well as a number of large rivers flowing into the bay such as the Dyfi, Aeron, Afon Glaslyn and the historically important Teifi, which has at one time a busier port than Cardiff’s!
Activities
There are scores of activities you can try out in Cardigan Bay, and if you’re into activity holidays then you can find some great days out, check out companies like Alpine Elements who specialise in these. The bay is good for both sailing and windsurfing as its large, exposed coast gives perfect windy conditions throughout the year and if you’re a beginner then there are plenty of schools in the area to teach you your preferred sport. If you fancy something more relaxing then try Cwmrhydneuadd Golf Club, one of Wales’ best clubs located near to the bay. Perfect if you’re just visiting the area because they offer club hire so you don’t have to bother with the hassle of taking your own on holiday with you.
The Sealife
The bay is also a haven for British scuba divers as it’s one of the best locations for diving in the UK and offers a diverse range of marine life. The Leatherback Turtle, the largest of the sea turtles, are a regular sight in the bay as the Irish Sea is its northernmost limit in terms of ocean-range. Growing up to three metres long they’re a great thing to look out for both on dives and on the beaches in the birth season. Also found is the Minke Whale, Dolphins, Mako sharks, Trigger fish and seahorses.
