France's Best Ski Resorts
The French Alps are visited by millions of people each year with one common goal; to ski some of the best slopes in the world. France’s ski resorts are not just some of the best in Europe but rank up there with Aspen and offer good slopes, good food and good accommodation in several major resorts. So in case you’re thinking of skiing in the French Alps, here’s the best on offer.
Val D'Isere
The most popular and visited of all the French ski resorts, Val D'Isere is a great mix of young and old, advanced and beginner, traditional and modern and caters for all tastes. The accommodation is reasonably priced, the restaurants can be expensive but the equipment hire is great value for money and saves you the worry of having your own skis. Lessons are available as always and with excellent off piste slopes for the experts, Val D'Isere is a good destination for groups with members of mixed ability. Check out the New Year’s show for a special treat of fireworks and dance.
Tignes
The old village of Tignes was originally situated below Val D'Isere in the Isere valley, but after the Second World War it was flooded for the construction of the Tignes dam and every ten years when it’s emptied for maintenance, parts of the old town can be seen before it's filled up again. As far as the slopes are concerned Tignes is a great for skiers of all abilities with 137 pisted slopes in total comprised of 22 greens, 64 reds, 35 blues and 16 blacks you’ll never be able to ski all of them in one holiday! Much like its main rival Val D'Isere, Tignes can be expensive if you aren't careful so be sure to do a little research before you travel.
Les Trois Vallees
Located in the Savoie region, just above Moutiers and near to the Vanoise National Park, you’ll find the perfect location for skiing. Comprised of eight main resorts, you can choose to ski just one, two or all three of the valleys depending on how much you want to fork out for a lift pass. But if you’re willing to splash the cash then skiing all three is an experience never to be forgotten. With 183 lifts, 600km of piste slopes, 120km of cross-country ski slopes and 1,500 ski instructors to help to learn it’s the ultimate ski holiday not just in France but arguably in the world. This is as close to perfection for a ski enthusiast as can be hoped for.
