Tignes

Billed as one of the world’s best ‘super-resorts’ due to the number of different activities available in the area throughout the year, Tignes is a great place to visit if you’re into skiing, snowboarding, walking, or mountain biking thanks to its diverse and beautiful landscape. So if you’re thinking of visiting Tignes for a holiday, here’s a guide to its best bits.

Skiing

Comprising of five villages; Val Claret, Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet, Tignes Les Boisses and Tignes-les-Brévières with the first three at 2100metres and the latter two lower down the valley. With 18 black runs, 16 reds, 40 blue and 1 green it’s more suited to intermediate to advanced skiers, but beginners can easily tackle some easy blues and will feel at home doing so too. Equipment hire is reasonable but the lift passes can be expensive so do be sure to allow enough money to cover your stay by doing a little research into pricing before you leave. And Tignes also has a special blessing; due to its high altitude it’s one of the rare locations which you can go for a ski holiday in summer on the 25km of runs which remain open all year round. Well worth considering.

Walking and Biking

As well as the skiing, Tignes is popular for its mountain biking and walking opportunities during the summer months. Walkers can use the ski lifts which remain open to reach some excellent alpine landscapes and the Vanoise national park are perfect for walkers too. Rafting is also possible on the mountain rivers, try checking out companies that offer specialist activity holidays like Alpine Elements for ideas and great ski deals. There’s also an alpine lake which is perfect for windsailing, the surrounding mountains pushing gusts down onto the lake for perfect conditions on most days.

Accommodation

The type of travelling party you’re in should denote what kind of accommodation to opt for. Groups who can fit into a chalet and want the extra comfort and room which comes with it will benefit also from good prices as a chalet rental split evenly amongst you all will work out to be great value for money. However, hotels are easier in that they have a restaurant and often arrange activity evenings such as quiz nights. Both are well priced though and you can get some great deals by booking months in advance and doing a good amount of research. Happy holidays!
