Travel By Road

   

There are four main routes into West Wales from England.


Traveller's Tips

Ceredigion is both the ancient and modern name for Cardiganshire.

So when you see

You have arrived.


From London and Southern England
. (About 4-5 hours)
M4 /A48 to Carmarthen and then the A484 to Newcastle Emlyn and Cardigan.

From the North Midlands
(About 3 hours)
Try the M54/A5 to Telford, then A458/A470/A489 to Machynlleth and the A487 to Aberystwyth.

Traveller's Tips


Try the
A40 via Oxford to Lampeter and then on to the coast. It takes all day but there is a very pleasant journey through some interesting towns and villages. The scenery of the Breacon Beacons in Mid Wales is delightful.

One of the cheapest places to buy petrol in West Wales is at the Cross Hands Services on the A48 east of Carmarthen.

 

TOP

From Birmingham and South Midlands
(About 3 hours)
Take the A44 from Worcester to Aberystwyth. Or the M50/A40 to Carmarthen and the A484 to Newcastle Emlyn and Cardigan.

Manchester and the North

(About 3-4 hours)
M56 towards Ellesmere Port then A494 to Dolgellau and then the A487 to Aberystwyth.

Traveller's Tips

The journey from Manchester takes you through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park.
Why not stop at the Centre for Alternative Technology two miles north of Machynlleth. Great for lunch!

 


Travel By Coach

Coach Travel Wales is now operating a coach service to Manchester from Aberystwyth departing on Thursdays and Saturdays via Machynlleth, Newtown, Welshpool, Oswestry, Wrexham and Chester.

701 Aberystwyth to Cardiff via Aberaeron, Lampeter, Carmarthen, Swansea and Port Talbot Fridays and Sundays throughout the year commencing 2nd February 2007

702   Aberystwyth to Llandudno via Machynlleth, Dolgellau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Betws y Coed and Llanrwst

1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from March until November

Travel By Train

 

From London First Great Western run an hourly service from London Paddington to Swansea with a connection to Carmarthen
Journey time 4 hours.

Buses taxis and car hire are readily available at Carmarthen station to bring you to your accommodation.
Ask your accommodation provider for details.
For Aberystwyth travel from London Euston via Birmingham.
Journey time about 5 hours.
Again a delightful train journey with some lovely views particularly from Machynlleth along the Dyfi estuary.

Buses taxis and car hire are readily available at Aberystwyth station to bring you to your accommodation.
Ask your accommodation provider for details.

A few trains are straight through to Carmarthen, Check when booking.

Apex fares are available if you book 7 days in advance.

The views of the Tywi estuary between Swansea and Carmarthen are stunning. Look out for the herons fishing on the banks of the river.

From Birmingham

There is a regular service every two hours to Aberystwyth. Again a delightful train journey with some lovely views particularly from Machynlleth along the Dyfi estuary.

From Manchester There is a regular service to Aberystwyth. Change at Shrewsbury.

Traveller's Tips


Eurostar services from Paris, Lille and Brussels arrive at London Waterloo.There is a direct service from Waterloo to Carmarthen. It takes 5 hours but is a very pleasant journey through southern England and Wales.

For Euston use the Underground Northern Line.

For Paddington use the Jubilee line to Baker Street and then the Circle line to Paddington.

By Air

 

The following information will help you select the best airport to use.

All airports have good coach, train and road links to West Wales. Check with your travel agent or use the links for more details.

   

To London:
Heathrow
Gatwick
Luton
Stansted

Heathrow is the most convenient. There are regular coaches from the airport to West Wales or take the bus to Reading rail station and then the train to Carmarthen.

Stansted. There is a train service via Birmingham to Aberystwyth but it takes all day!

Luton and Gatwick are north and south of London so it means a one hour plus trip into London to pick up a train or coach to West Wales.

 

Traveller's Tip

The low cost airline EasyJet flies into Luton from many European cities and offers economic car hire. It is about 4 hours drive to West Wales.


To Birmingham

There is a train to Aberystwyth approximately every two hours. By car is about 3 hours drive.

To Manchester

By car three hours drive to Aberystwyth via the beautiful Snowdonia National park. National Coaches run a regular service from the airport to Aberystwyth

To Cardiff

Wales own International airport. Flights from U.K. and some European cities, including Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris.
Easy road and train connections to West Wales.
